When Cam Williams reported to South Bend, there was some hope that he’d be an impact wide receiver for the Notre Dame football team. Instead, he played exactly one snap in exactly one game.
Some prospects like Williams might have had a problem with that approach. He was a 4-star prospect that had plenty of teams vying for his attention. However, it appears that the coaches have talked to Williams enough about it that he understands and agrees with their approach.
The former 4-star prospect talked about those plans and the reasons why he didn’t play in 2024 when he appeared with his Notre Dame football teammates on Monday. He told the assembled press that he understood why he saw so little action and there isn’t even the slightest rumbling that he might be on the way out as a result.
Notre Dame football’s Cam Williams understands approach
"Obviously, I wanted to be out there playing,” Williams said during media day. “But sometimes I think if I was thrown right into the fire, it probably wouldn't have gone well. I can accept that."
Williams added that he needed to learn a lot about running routes. His athletic ability covered for a lot before he got to South Bend. During his high school career he basically ran post, go and comeback routes. With a year of practice and scout team participation, he’s learned a lot about running routes.
One of the most important parts of this is that the Notre Dame football coaches communicated with Cam Williams about what his role would be in the 2024 season. And because of that communication, everyone emerges happy, and the receiver will now enter 2025 with a real chance to win playing time and make an impact on the field.
