In about 36 hours, the Notre Dame football team will know its fate. Will the Irish head to the College Football Playoff, or will they have to settle for a bowl game? Until Selection Sunday, fans will be on the edge of their seats, but Boise State winning on Friday night knocked over the first domino in a good way for the Blue and Gold.
On Tuesday night, CFP chairman Hunter Yurachek made it clear that while the Irish are technically "in," things could shift depending on how everything shakes out this weekend. The Broncos winning the Mountain West is one situation that shakes out in Marcus Freeman's and Co.'s favor.
Yurachek indicated that a team could move up or down if its playoff resume strengthened or weakened based on what happened this weekend. For Notre Dame, a team they beat soundly, winning a conference championship could count.
How Boise State’s win affects Notre Dame’s College Football Playoff path
Boise State didn't just win its third straight and final Mountain West title. It won it convincingly, throttling UNLV 38-21.
The Broncos weren't as dominant this season as they were in years past, but they did finish up the regular season winning four in a row. And now they'll go to a bowl sitting at 9-4.
There are other dominoes that need to fall the right way. Texas Tech needs to knock off BYU. Irish fans should root for Georgia to not just beat Alabama but beat them down. Virginia needs to take care of business against Duke.
If all of those things happen, Notre Dame has its best shot of not getting bumped down and bumped out. If the CFP Committee is paying attention to the resume to the minute details they claim, Boise State winning could be how the Irish get a chance to play for the National Title.
