CJ Carr’s latest mock draft projection makes a Notre Dame return suddenly plausible

Ahead of CJ Carr's possible final season with Notre Dame, all kinds of NFL mock drafts show him as one of the best quarterbacks available. Few mocks don't have him selected in the first round. However, if one new mock is accurate, he might stick around in South Bend for one more season.

Rob Rang of Fox Sports recently put together his latest NFL Mock Draft, and he doesn't seem all that impressed with Carr. Rang has the Irish QB as the No. 30 overall pick, landing with the Minnesota Vikings.

At first glance, the Vikings would be a very nice landing spot for Carr. The Notre Dame star would potentially land with a team that doesn't seem to have a set quarterback. There's even a chance that Carr could be the starter in 2027, if the Vikings wanted to go into a rebuild situation. Granted, that would be a hard sell, considering Rang putting Minnesota at No. 30 would mean they made the NFC Championship game.

Carr might return to Notre Dame for one more season because going No. 30 would also make him the fifth quarterback taken in the draft. Rang has Arch Manning (No. 5), Trinidad Chambliss (No. 6), Dante Moore (No. 9), and Drew Mestemaker (No. 21) all getting selected ahead of the Fighting Irish signal caller.

It's long been the consensus that Manning is considered the top quarterback in the 2027 class (always assuming he goes pro as well) but who the No. 2 quarterback would be is very much up in the air. Carr has been that second QB taken in next spring's draft quite a bit. Even if Moore is the second quarterback, Carr falling all the way to the fifth spot in his position seems rather suprising.

Of course, this is just one reporter's NFL Mock, and it isn't what the NFL scouts actually believe, but if it does come close to matching, it would be a real question whether Carr wants to enter the draft and be the fifth quarterback taken, or wait for the 2028 NFL Draft and perhaps be the first player taken and certainly contend for first quarterback.

Carr and every other player who has the opportunity to return for 2027 will put out feelers to the league before they declare for the draft. If for some reason the Notre Dame star sees his stock dropping, there's a chance he could decide to return to South Bend one more season.
