When it seemed the CJ Carr hype couldn't get any bigger, Notre Dame football staged a "jersey scrimmage" on Saturday morning, where onlookers came away even more impressed with the young quarterback. To a person, every analyst who got a look at the practice session sung the praises of Carr in a way that should excite Irish fans ahead of a "prove it" type season in 2026.

"Here’s the thing about CJ Carr‘s performance in the scrimmage," Pete Sampson from The Athletic said after watching practice. "It looked like he broke into the office of Chris Ash last night, copied the call sheet and knew all the defensive plays before they were run. It just seems like Carr has an answer for everything."

Every other reporter and analyst who watched Notre Dame work out on Saturday said roughly the same thing. Every single one was impressed by Carr's decision-making. He read a defense that is impressive in its own right and owned the day.

It's not as though the CJ Carr hype was remotely low-key before. The Irish QB opened 2026 as one of the favorites for the 2026 Heisman Trophy. The good news from Saturday's scrimmage is that the young signal caller isn't letting the hype go to his head.

Notre Dame offense looks like the real deal with CJ Carr coming back

Instead of getting a big head and resting on his laurels, he's continuing to improve. He's getting even better. And he's earning the respect of everyone who watches him work.

It's only April, and Notre Dame fans have a long way to go until the 2026 season opener. However, it's hard not to be giddy when thinking about how good the Fighting Irish passing attack might be.
