Who exactly will be the next player to commit to the Notre Dame footbal team? While it seems unlikely that Gavin Mueller will be the “next” guy to commit to the Fighting Irish, Marcus Freeman and company took a step towards locking him down this week.

Mueller, the Class of 2026 tight end out of South Elgin, Illinois., has put the Blue and Gold in his final four list along with Colorado, Wisconsin and LSU. Considering he does have a May 14 commitment date, there is at least a chance that he could jump the line and be the next 4-star prospect to pull the trigger.

Notre Dame football in final four for 4-star tight end Gavin Mueller

If Notre Dame football is going to win the battle, it’s got its work cut out for it. The 6-foot-6, 235-pounder took an unofficial visit to see South Bend earlier this month. But, at the moment, his timeline isn’t lining up well with the Irish’s pursuit of him.

“I have an early commitment day and they don't do any OVs in May,” Mueller told Irish Sports Daily

The tight end who took an official to Wisconsin this past weekend and heads to Colorado next weekend. He also has an official set for LSU the weekend after that, leading up to his announcement.

Despite that timeline looking like it might be anyone but the Irish, they are honestly still in the running.

“I was Coach Denbrock's first stop. It means a lot to me. He's the OC, not just the tight ends coach. For him to stop at my school first really makes me feel like a priority. We're texting right now, we're trying to figure something out. Notre Dame's got a special spot in my heart, so I'd love for it to work out.

That the Notre Dame football team has a “special place in Mueller’s heart is a nice tidbit. They should press that advantage over the next few weeks.
