Is Curt Cignetti still smarting from the whupping the Notre Dame football team put on his team in the College Football Playoffs in 2024? Indiana planning a National Championship trophy tour stop in South Bend certainly makes it seem like it.
Fresh off the program's first National Title, the Hoosiers announced on Friday they'll be taking the trophy all over the state. Each stop on the tour is technically a branch of the university and its satellite campuses, but even Indiana fans know going into South Bend is about more than simply letting students there get a glimpse.
"It's now been 38 years since Notre Dame won a national title in football," Indiana State of Mind writer Connor Grootenhuis noted in a recent article. "With its last title coming nearly four decades ago in 1988. As the reigning national champs, Hoosier fans will be sure to soak in all of the celebrating they can when the trophy tour takes a pit stop in South Bend on April 2."

Notre Dame football fans have not forgotten the last time Indiana came to town and the trophy tour stop in South Bend only adds fuel to that fire
The trophy tour will start next week in Richmond, Indiana and then work its way around Indiana and back to Bloomington. For those who may not be aware, IU South Bend has an enrollment of about 4,700 students.
It's safe to say that in years past, most of the football fans who attend that campus claimed they were Notre Dame fans, but this year, they'll suddenly be proud to wear their crimson and cream. Irish fans know just how rare this is for Hoosiers fans and will almost certainly let them have their fun when the trophy does roll through early next month.
After that tour, it will be time to remind any Hoosiers' fans chirping about the last season that the last time Indiana came into town, they left with their tail between their legs. Perhaps it was lucky they didn't need to face off against Notre Dame in 2025 in order to win it all. Things might have been a bit different if they had.Â
