Jeremiyah Love doesn't get the draft-day trade his post-Notre Dame career needed

In the lead-up to the 2026 NFL Draft this week, there was an awful lot of talk about how the Arizona Cardinals shouldn't select Jeremiyah Love. The argument was that the team has too many holes to be dedicating so much of its capital and money to the Notre Dame star. What was largely ignored is that the team that picked No. 3 was hardly a great fit for the running back.

With Love as good as he is, he was always going to be selected very early in the draft, but there are other teams that would have better landing spots. Consider the team going just one spot after Arizona.

Jeremiyah Love deserved better than the Arizona Cardinals

The Tennessee Titans were terrible in 2025, but they've got some weapons at their disposal. The Notre Dame star could have teamed up with Cam Ward, Calvin Ridley, and Wan'Dale Robinson on an offense that could be impressive. Instead, Love is now going to a team whose quarterback is a journeyman who has been a backup far more often than a starter.

There was also so much debate around Love getting selected at No. 3, the anticipation of what he does in his rookie season is going to be that much greater.

Notre Dame star needs to be given room to prove himself in Arizona

There's also the added note that the Cards have several running backs on the roster, including James Conner, whom they already like. So now the rookie will need to fight off veterans who, until this week thought were in line for the job.

None of this is to say that Jeremiyah Love should feel bad about Thursday night. He worked hard to be the first running back to be taken in the Top 5 since 2018. He's got the talent to make a statement. It's just unfortunate that he'll have to do it with such a mess of an NFL franchise.
