Joey O'Brien came into his first spring with Notre Dame, saying and doing all the right things. That's why it was a massive bummer, and a pretty big concern when he was spotted on the sidelines during Saturday's Blue-Gold game on crutches. Perhaps even more concerning is that the Fighting Irish coaches are mum so far on just what the issue might be.

Early in the Blue-Gold game, O'Brien was seen needing help to get off the field. He never returned to action and only returned to the sidelines on those aforementioned crutches. Now the question becomes: Is this something that will be fine in a few weeks, or something that could last well into the fall?

Joey O'Brien offers reason for concern for Notre Dame faithful after spring game injury

The Notre Dame safety has played well enough before the last scrimmage of the spring that he was living up to the hype. There is real talk that he could get plenty of playing time this fall. Of course, whatever is bugging him physically will need to be sorted out for that to happen.

The biggest concern, of course, is that the defensive back might have been on crutches because of a ligament tear in his knee. Even a bad ankle sprain could spell trouble for the true freshman. Any setback in his workout schedule this spring and summer could mean his development is pushed back for the fall.

Notre Dame waits for Joey O'Brien prognosis

For now, Notre Dame fans will sit and wait and hope that whatever the problem is for Joey O'Brien, it's a minor one. There is at least a bit of a silver lining that the injury didn't cause him to miss any time this spring.
