Notre Dame gets rocked as longtime blue-chip safety pledge walks away

The 2027 momentum has cooled fast, and Notre Dame football just felt that reality again in a big way.

Back in November, Khalil Terry was the crown jewel of the Notre Dame football recruiting class. Now, the one-time Penn State commit is now also a former Fighting Irish commit. Terry announced he'd officially reopened his recruitment on Monday night, almost exactly six months from when he gave his pledge to Marcus Freeman and Co.

247Sports Tom Loy was the first to announce Terry's decommitment. However, it seems as if Freeman and his staff knew something was up for a while now. Despite having him locked down since last winter, the Irish have been recruiting quite a few safeties.

Some of that could be about wanting more than one commitment at the position. But it also looked like Notre Dame was hedging its bets. Terry, out of Tustin (Tustin, CA), is thought to be considering Oklahoma and Auburn as well as his home state's school, UCLA.

While the Irish have quite a few offers out to 2027 safeties, Khalil Terry's loss means they don't have any commits at the position. It also takes a school that spent most of the year in the Top 10 recruiting classes down to No. 14.

Notre Dame currently has 8 commits with four on defense, three on offense, and a long snapper. James Halter is the lone offensive tackle; Xavier Hasan and Ace Alston at cornerback, Isaiah Rogers and Lathan Whisenton at running back; Amarri Irvin at linebacker, Richie Flanigan at defensive line; and Sean Kraft at the aforementioned long snapper.
