Auburn fans need to stop dreaming about hiring Marcus Freeman

Why Marcus Freeman to Auburn rumors make zero sense

It feels like Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman has been linked to just about every open job out there this year. Here's one that has no shot of ever being true. Auburn fans need to give up any dream they might have to land the Fighting Irish head man. There is zero chance he's taking over for Hugh Freeze.

One reason why Freeman might be linked to the Auburn job is that one of his biggest former commits plays quarterback for the Tigers. However, Deuce Knight alone isn't anywhere close to enough to get him to leave South Bend.

Notre Dame football is a far better job than Auburn

War Eagle fans, of course, will feel as though the job is somehow better than Notre Dame. They're wrong. Not just because they have to square off with programs like Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, and LSU every year, but simply because the Fighting Irish are in a better place than Auburn is.

At least with the rumors about Marcus Freeman going to Penn State, it was about the possibility of heading to a top-notch Big Ten program that went to the College Football Playoffs last year. LSU and Florida are both deep-pocket SEC schools that appear ready to leap if they can get a good head coach.

And Marcus Freeman isn't going to those programs either. Notre Dame continues to be a better job than any of them.

Auburn is, quite frankly, a mess. It has been for quite a while. It's been quite a while since the Tigers have been on solid footing. Indeed, the firing of Hugh Freeze in the middle of the season shows they're not close to stable at the moment.

The Notre Dame football program might have to worry about Marcus Freeman leaving for the NFL at some point. But the idea that he'd ever leave for Auburn is not remotely realistic.
