The Notre Dame football team has been weirdly quiet so far in this period of the transfer portal. At least they haven’t been on the record as pursuing numerous guys the way they have in the past.
That didn’t stop the Fighting Irish to go out and get a big-time player to fill a spot of need for next season. What is most impressive about the get is how under the radar it is, despite Devonta Smith being among the most talented cornerbacks in the portal at the moment.
Smith entered the portal a few days ago and it appears he knew exactly where he wanted to go when he did. According to Pete Nakos of On3, the former Alabama defensive back has signed with the Notre Dame football team. It would seem as though he’s poised to replace Benjamin Morrison, who is on his way to the NFL after missing this season with an injury.

In getting Smith, the Irish have gotten themselves what On3 sees as the top corner back available. That’s despite the fact that so far, he hasn’t put up big numbers. He was once a 4-star prospect and the Irish certainly hope he can find that talen again.
In 2024, Devonta Smith recorded 30 tackles and a forced fumble while logging 5 passes defended. He could in fact, be used with the Notre Dame football team as either the replacement for Morrison, or he could be looked at as more of a nickelback, taking Jordan Clark’s spot next season.
