When it came to the Notre Dame football team's loss to the Miami Hurricanes on Sunday, there were plenty of things that went wrong. Among them was a defensive approach that left a lot to be desired as far as a pass rush went. There was also the confounding way the Irish used their running backs and Jeremiyah Love specifically. But there was one area that stood out the most as a worry that needs to be fixed quickly, and that had to do with the offensive line.
It's not just that the offensive line in general had some issues. It's that the pass blocking was truly terrible. Only one player really carried his weight in that regard, and the unit, which was billed as among the best in the country, needs to figure things out fast, especially since it looks like the passing game is going to be a bigger part of ND's attack in 2025.
The Notre Dame football team must find a way to give CJ Carr more time
Coming into the game against Miami, the Notre Dame football team knew it would face a furious pass rush, but it thought it was well-suited to stop it cold. The coaching staff was very much wrong in that regard.
Looking at PFF, the overall ratings for the offensive linemen were bad enough. Looking at the pass blocking ratings, they were quite a bit worse.
Only center Ashton Craig came away with a genuinely positive 83.2 rating. The next best was Billy Schrauth, who posted just a 61.1 rating for pass blocking. The rest of the unit was downright terrible. Right tackle Aamil Wagner posted just a 38.4 grade, Sullivan Absher had just a 29.8 grade, left tackle Anthonie Knapp was just 12.9, Styles Prescod rated at just 10.5, and right guard Guerby Lambert was a terrible 2.4 grade.
The good news is that the Notre Dame football team has a couple of weeks to get ready for its next game. The bad news is that the opponent doesn't get any easier against Texas A&M.
