Notre Dame football was already on a roll in May. On Tuesday morning, the Irish landed Oluwasemilore Olubobola, an offensive tackle who could be the crowning jewel of the Fighting Irish recruiting class. At the very least, the big man from New Jersey is the top commit in a month full of strong additions.
Oluwasemilore Olubobola pushes Notre Dame football higher with a 5-star pledge
The No. 3 offensive tackle in the 2027 class, and the best player in the state, announced his commitment date last week, alongside the Final Three schools he was considering. The Irish were technically doing battle with Miami and Texas A&M. However, analysts entered a number of picks that indicated the Fighting Irish were running away with the race.
The newest Notre Dame player announced his decision to head to South Bend on the Rivals YouTube channel. As is the case with most players who declare they’ll be part of the Fighting Irish, he didn’t waste any time letting the world know Marcus Freeman and Co. scored a big one.
The commitment might have technically involved three teams, but Texas A&M was always considered the long shot. Most analysts believed the real battle came down to Notre Dame and Miami. The Florida Gators once had an outside shot as well, though they eventually fell off before the commit date.
Oluwasemilore Olubobola could become the centerpiece of Notre Dame football’s class
With Notre Dame’s 15th commitment of the 2027 class, the Irish also get to win a rivalry with the Hurricanes that isn’t just on the field. The two programs have squared off over several prospects. This particular victory is one that Marcus Freeman can really spike into Mario Cristobal's face as the Irish celebrate another win.
Notre Dame entered Tuesday ranked No. 6 and No. 10 in the nation in recruiting classes by 247Sports and On3, respectively. With the addition of the 6-foot-6, 295-pound Oluwasemilore Olubobola, the Fighting Irish are bound to jump a few spots.
Beyond getting one of the best players in the entire class, the Fighting Irish are putting together one heck of an “all-name team,” especially when noting that this team spans multiple cycles. Keep in mind that as soon as 2028, Oluwasemilore Olubobola will be laying blocks for Wonderful Terrific Monds. Why he chose to go by Champ is one of the greatest mistakes of the quarterback’s generation.
While great names are all fun and games, the real win, of course, is just how much talent Notre Dame is amassing through recruiting, which has seen a surge since the 2026 class. After a slow period that saw the Irish drop a few spots in the rankings, a start to May that’s seen five commits in 12 days has infused it with new energy.
More than that, Notre Dame’s 2027 offensive line class now includes two of the top six offensive tackles with the commitment of Oluwasemilore Olubobola. Last October, fellow top-100 prospect James Halter committed to Notre Dame out of Central Catholic in Pittsburgh.
