The Notre Dame football team is officially in the College Football Playoffs. And even better news than that is they are safely in the field. Thought obviously, they still need to win out in order to keep their hold on the field.
On Tuesday night, the first official rankings show that the Fighting Irish are the No. 10 seed in the field. If the season were to end today, they would be traveling to Happy Valley to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions., who are the No. 7 seed.
Outside of that matchup being a pretty interesting showdown, especially with two cold weather teams facing off in December, it's one of the teams on the other side of the of the bracket that's most interesting for Notre Dame football.
Notre Dame football and Indiana could pull off something very funny
The way the bracket currently shakes out, the Indiana Hoosiers are currently the No. 9 seed and would travel to Tennessee. But should both IU and ND take care of business and win all their games, it would mean that the first 12-team College Football Playoffs would feature an all-Indiana final.
One would have to think that the NCAA and all of those very rich Power Conference presidents were not envisioning two teams from Indiana to face off in the big final.
While it's extremely unlikely this would unfold, especially since the rankings could face some serious shifts before the end of the season, it's not totally unrealistic. The Notre Dame football team has started to dominate its opponents in the second half of the season with the offense shifting into another gear and the defense still being elite.
Meanwhile, the Indiana Hoosiers have only trailed in one game all season, and they came back to win that one game 47-10 last week.
