Sooner rather than later, Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman was going to have to make a difficult decision at quarterback. On Tuesday, that call finally came in, with CJ Carr being named the starting QB for Week 1 vs. Miami.

This came as a bit of a surprise, as Freeman recently said that there was no timeline for a decision. With Carr being named the starter, the Irish are now ready to move forward with him running the offense. With Carr being a redshirt freshman too, this is his team for the long haul. Does that mean that Kenny Minchey might have one foot out the door before we know it?

Kenny Minchey could leave Notre Dame this winter after losing QB battle with CJ Carr

Carr is entering his second season on campus, while Minchey, a redshirt sophomore, is in his third campaign in South Bend. He made the move to town with hopes of one day taking over as the team's starting quarterback, something he was in a prime position to do this summer.

However, he and Carr were in a neck-and-neck battle throughout camp and Freeman decided that Carr is the right man for the job to get this offense to where it needs to be. From an eligibility standpoint, it really seems like the writing is on the wall here for Minchey.

If he decides to stay in South Bend to close out his career, he's not going to be a starter - that's just a fact. He'll have to accept that he's going to be the backup and only see significant action if Carr either gets injured or he struggles down the road.

If Carr plays well and proves Freeman right with his decision, then Minchey will spend the majority of the next few years on the bench holding a clipboard. That's not what he wants. Soon enough, he may choose that he'll want to push for a starting job elsewhere.

He of course can't leave now, but once the transfer portal opens up this winter, no one should be shocked if he informs Freeman that he's going to fight for more playing time elsewhere. There's always the chance that Carr doesn't play well and Minchey takes over midway through the season, but that's probably something Notre Dame fans aren't hoping for.
