The Notre Dame Fighting Irish couldn’t have entered the summer dead period any better than they did on Monday afternoon. Not only did Marcus Freeman and his staff score a legacy commitment that most analysts and fans thought was coming in Julius Jones Jr, but they also scored his younger brother, Andre Jones. Said younger brother plays on the other side of the ball and is considered one of the best safety prospects in the 2028 class.
Andre and Julius are both sons of former Irish running back Julius Jones Sr., and it’s clear that at least part of the draw for the two young football stars was the chance to make South Bend a real family affair. Julius’s announcement was the one that most of America turned into on the Pat McAfee show, but just moments after he made his announcement, Andre followed suit and gave Freeman two legacy commitments for the price of one.
Julius Jones Jr. and Andre Jones give Notre Dame football rare legacy double
When Notre Dame offered Andre Jones a few months ago, he had not yet been rated by any of the major recruiting platforms. However, on the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Jones is now rated as a four-star, the No. 315 overall player, the No. 29 safety, and the No. 45 player from the state of Florida for the 2028 recruiting class. Those rankings continue to trend upward.
In addition to the Irish, Andre Jones has offers from Oregon, Texas A&M, Penn State, Indiana, Florida State, and UCLA, among many others. Despite his commitment to Notre Dame, it seems unlikely those teams will back off from the 2028 prospect. More teams will join that group over the next several months, especially during what should be a huge junior season.
Last year, the St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) DB amassed 37 total tackles, 26 solo tackles, 1 interception, and 4 pass breakups. Considering that it was his freshman season, the safety is only expected to improve and rise in the ranks at his position and in his state.
While the younger Jones brother is seen as a likely safety at the next level, it’s not out of the question that he could move all over the defensive backfield when he gets to Notre Dame.
He rated out as the top cornerback during 1-on-1s at the Rivals Camp in Miami. The rising junior demonstrated advanced coverage skills and stayed in phase with receivers. He made an impressive pass breakup during red zone 1-on-1’s, showing a quick break on the ball. The 2028 prospect appears to have good size and positional versatility.
Julius Jones Jr added to a quickly growing 2027 class for Notre Dame, becoming the 19th pledge for this cycle and the second (and likely final) wide receiver to commit to the Irish this cycle. Meanwhile, Andre Jones is just the second commit for 2028. He joins kicker Owen Davies out of Brentwood, Tennessee, who committed earlier this month.
