Fresh off Monday’s dual commitments from Julius Jones Jr and Andre Jones, Notre Dame looks in line to land its 2028 quarterback. After a visit to South Bend, Trey Tagliaferri drew several predictions from 247Sports and On3 to eventually pull the trigger for Marcus Freeman and Co.
Tagliaferri received predictions on Sunday from Rivals analysts Steve Wiltfong and Mike Singer. Their quick arrival usually indicates that the predictions are more than just a hunch and that there was real movement in his recruitment. On Monday morning, Brian Dohn of 247Sports logged his own prediction for the Irish to score the pledge of the signal-caller in the near future.
After some early momentum with Alexander City (AL) Benjamin Russell quarterback Kingston Preyear and Plantation (FL) American Heritage star Neimann Lawrence, things seem to have shifted with the 2028 quarterback recruiting. Trey Tagliaferri has quickly become the most likely quarterback of the future for Notre Dame to land.
After taking multiple trips to South Bend this offseason, things are trending incredibly quickly with the New Jersey native. While another New Jersey QB, Hun School standout Lukas Prock, is certainly worth keeping a close eye on for Notre Dame, he doesn’t appear to be anywhere close to decision-making mode. Tagliaferri hasn’t put out a firm decision timeline, but the predictions all coming in grouped together seem to indicate he could be close.
Trey Tagliaferri predictions point toward Notre Dame football commitment
The Irish tend to recruit quarterbacks this way. The coaching staff will narrow things down to two quarterbacks and then put all their chips on the table. Whoever pulls the trigger first has the committable offer. Of course, there are some wrinkles in the 2028 class since ND has only scored one QB in each of the last few classes; it’s possible they could take Tagliaferri and Prock, should they both want to pull the trigger for the South Bend school. The question is whether Prock would still be interested if the Bergen Catholic product were to give his pledge first.
The other wild card here is that while Tagliaferri is a talented passer, he doesn’t have the dual threat capabilities that Mike Denbrock usually likes. Granted, it’s not as though CJ Carr will ever put up Riley Leonard-type numbers on the ground.
The quarterback had a breakout season as a sophomore in 2025. Last season, he completed 133-of-214 attempts, throwing for 2,212 passing yards and 29 touchdowns to just 3 interceptions.
In the 247Sports Composite, Tagliaferri is a 4-star prospect ranked No. 204 nationally, No. 14 at quarterback, and No. 9 in New Jersey. Should Notre Dame manage to land him, one of the most interesting aspects of his commitment would be the progress the Irish have made in establishing a Bergen Catholic pipeline in New Jersey.
With his recruitment far from over, there are some schools that Freeman could still find pose a problem. Last week, Trey Tagliaferri took a trip to Oklahoma, and he was clearly impressed by what he saw. “OU has always produced great quarterbacks,” Tagliaferri said right after his trip. “OU is quarterback university, and that is somewhere I would want to be.”
Despite that sentiment, for now, it looks like the New Jersey signal caller is even more interested in Notre Dame.
