When the Notre Dame football team lines up against Miami on Sunday night, most of the questions about who will start and who will see a bunch of playing time are ones that the Irish will have answered. However, right guard still comes packed with questions, including who gets more time on the field between Sullivan Absher and Guerby Lambert.
Former Notre Dame offensive lineman Bob Morton thinks he knows how fans should want things to shake out. He even laid out why he thinks the secret sauce for a win over the Hurricanes will come if Absher is the man who is playing the bulk of right guard in the 4th quarter, mainly.
Why Notre Dame football needs a power run game to beat Miami in the fourth quarter
Morton appeared on a recent episode of the Blue and Gold podcast and laid out what Notre Dame needs to decide on Sunday. If things go right and head coach Marcus Freeman makes the right call, it will be all about outlasting the 'Canes.

"What you're going to want to see by the end of Game One, and this is not to say he beats him out. I think in the third and fourth quarters, you want Sullivan Absher to be in the game because that means the end of Miami is going to be like the end of Texas A&M last year, which is we are going to run however we want to right at him. And if we're going to have just a run dominant fourth quarter, Sullivan's your guy. Like that's who you're going to put in there."
It's a fascinating look at how Morton thinks the game will shake out as well. While there's been plenty of talk about the new wide receivers and, of course, CJ Carr at quarterback, the former Irish star thinks the running game will be key.
Morton also clearly thinks Notre Dame football will have a slugfest on its hands. Sunday's matchup isn't a game he sees as a blowout either way. Instead, the Fighting Irish will have to outlast Miami. As long as they win, fans will be plenty happy about that being the way they get there.
