Notre Dame football had been quiet on the recruiting front for a little while, but before it closes the books on its 2027 class, it needed at least one elite commit. On Saturday afternoon, it landed 4-star linebacker Roman Igwebuike.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound defender from Mount Carmel High School (Chicago, IL) is ranked as the No. 123 player in the 2027 class, the No. 9 player at his position, and the No. 8 player in the state of Illinois according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The elite prospect had plenty of teams clamoring for his attention. In addition to Notre Dame, Roman Igwebuike had offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Minnesota, NC State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, USC, and Wisconsin, among others.

On Saturday, the linebacker picked the Fighting Irish over his other final five teams. Clemson, Indiana, Missouri, and Tennessee were all hoping to score his pledge, but they simply couldn’t overcome Marcus Freeman and Co.

Roman Igwebuike's commitment gives Notre Dame football a needed linebacker win

The Chicago prospect announced his commitment on the CBS Sports College Football YouTube channel, alongside several other targets who all chose Saturday to make their pledges. In doing so, he gave the Irish a big win at a position that has caused them some headaches in the last few months.

Notre Dame has missed out on other top linebackers this cycle, including 5-star Kaden Henderson and in-state 4-star Sean Fox, as well as Noah Glover and Amarri Irvin, both of whom decommitted. This has been the most frustrating position for the Irish to recruit in the 2027 cycle, however, with the Chicagoland defender now in the boat, some of that pain has been eased.

It’s not hard to understand why Igwebuike has so many high-powered programs that wanted to earn his services. Last season, Igwebuike finished his 2025 junior campaign at Mount Carmel with 111 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles, helping lead Mount Carmel to an Illinois Class 8A championship.

Now that Notre Dame has secured his commitment, they also have some bragging rights over some unofficial rivals. The Clemson Tigers were among those who thought they had a very real shot of landing the linebacker. Indiana was as well, but Freeman once again had the last laugh over the Hoosiers’ head coach, Curt Cignetti.

With the addition of Roman Igwebuike, Notre Dame now has 22 commitments already in the 2027 class. They entered Saturday with the second-ranked class in this cycle and will get to move just a bit closer to Texas A&M, which sits at the top of the rankings.
