We’ve known for a while now that tensions were high and tempers were short heading into the Notre Dame football game against USC. However, it appears one Irish player got caught losing his temper in a way that simply isn’t acceptable.

Just what will happen in the immediate aftermath of this incident is still up in the air, but it seems likekly that if Rylie Mills punching a trojan while he was on the ground is brought to the Irish coaches, he’s going to see some bench time.

During the first half of the game during a USC possession, Rylie Mills can be see hauling off and punching a Trojan offensive lineman in the… facemask. The intent was clear by the Notre Dame football player and that’s what’s most important here, but there’s also something to be said for how stupid it is to punch someone directly in the thing that is there to protect their face.

It is also an open question just how the information as to what Mills did will get to the coaches. Its worth pointing out that the refs didn’t see the punch as he wasn’t flagged for that shot.

It’s not just that you can’t allow a player do that sort of thing, but it’s the fact that he would have absolutely been tossed, or very near getting tossed had an official see Rylie Mills throw the punch.

This will be something to watch and see if it seems like Mills sits out any time with Notre Dame football, as the game goes on.
