When Steve Angeli entered the transfer portal, Notre Dame football fans knew they were going to have to see him go somewhere. I’m not sure they thought they realized he was probably going to go somewhere they’d have to play against him in 2025.
There was probably some hope that when Angeli first decided to say goodbye to the Blue and Gold, that he’d go somewhere like Tennessee. After all, the Vols just lost their starting quarterback in Nico Iamaleava around the same time period. And UT did indeed at least give the veteran Fighting Irish star a look.
However, reports on Tuesday have the former Notre Dame football quarterback landing with a different team with a different shade of orange in their color scheme. In fact, he’s expected to sign with the Syracuse Orange. And that of course means that he stands to be the starting quarterback for the team that Marcus Freeman and his new quarterback will face off against this fall.

Notre Dame football could face former QB Steve Angeli in late-season showdown
While it’s not official, both Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos have predicted Angeli to play for the ACC school. The landing spot makes sense. The ‘Cuse brought in a one-year transfer last season and all Kyle McCord did is lead the entirety of the college football world in passing yards with 4,779 while tossing 34 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions to go along with them.
McCord is now headed off to the NFL and the Orange are looking for a starting signal caller for the 2025 season. It’s a match made in heaven.
Angeli will get the chance to show that he really can lead a program on his own after being the backup to Sam Hartman and Riley Leonard. While he started only one game in that time period, the 2023 Sun Bowl after Hartman sat the bowl out, Angeli made the most of his limited playing time. The quarterback completed 72.5% of his passes for 772 yards, 10 touchdowns and just 1 interception.
Should Steve Angeli pick Syracuse, he will have the opportunity to try and pull off the upset against his former squad when the Orange take on Notre Dame football on November 22.
