The Notre Dame football team is hoping that it can do quite a bit more than simply beat Georgia on New Year’s Day. The Irish are on a mission to win the whole dang thing. And it appears some metrics think they have a great shot at doing just that.

The ESPN College Football Power Index has reshaped itself to predict who it thinks will win the title. Some might be surprised that Oregon is not at the top of the list. That honor belongs to the Texas Longhorns with a 27% chance of winning it all. They also have a 47% chance of making the title game.

Notre Dame football is second on the list, with a 20% chance to win the deal. They’re also second with a 37% chance of making the big game.

As it turns out, Oregon has some of the lowest odds to make the title game and to win it. The Ducks have just a 17.9% chance of making the championship game and just a 7.7% chance of winning the whole thing.

Both those numbers are only higher than Boise State (6.7 and 1.4%) and Arizona State (5.1 and 1.3%). That’s a bit of a surprise, considering that the Ducks are the only undefeated team in the playoffs and they’ve spent most of the season being considered a frontrunner for the title.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame football has had the make the argument they even belong in the College Football Playoffs for most of the season. However, their play of late appears to have convinced at least the numbers, that they not only belong, but are quite strong.
