As the Notre Dame lacrosse team begins yet another march towards a national title, one player is on his own journey towards history. Defender Shawn Lyght could be the first male at his position to win the Tewaaraton award.
The award is given to the best overall player in the sport every year, and while the Irish have won seven times, they've never had a defender take away the trophy. In fact, no school has ever had a man get his name called after making the finalists. Yet, Lyght is right there, with the Tewaaraton in his grasp.
Shawn Lyght has Notre Dame lacrosse chasing a rare Tewaaraton breakthrough
The Notre Dame defenseman already made history on Tuesday night, becoming just the seventh defenseman to be named a Tewaaraton Finalist. Lyght joins North Carolina's Owen Duffy, Cornell's Willem Firth, Princeton's Nate Kabiri, and Syracuse's Joey Spallina as the five finalists on the men's side.
The Irish lacrosse star has already taken home some hardware this season. Lyght is the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, sharing the honor with North Carolina's Brady Wambach.
Shawn Lyght could lead Notre Dame lacrosse into history and another title pushx
Lyght is also just the seventh player to be named a finalist in Notre Dame program history. Notre Dame has had at least one player named as a finalist each season since 2023. Pat Kavanagh is the only player in program history to win the award, doing so in 2024.
While Shawn Lyght tries to climb further towards his own history, he'll help the Notre Dame lacrosse team try to win yet another National Championship. After winning the title in 2023 and 2024, the Irish had a down year last season. However, this spring, they're looking to win their third title in four seasons.
