Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua might have been the only attendee of President Trump's College Sports Roundtable who said something that really made sense and wasn't entirely self-serving. While nothing will ultimately come of the roundtable, the Irish AD did offer up a framework for a rule that could help rein in spending, or at least make sure sports besides the Big Three keep getting funded.
As the round table went around and allowed most of the attendees to speak, Bevacqua spent his time on the mic talking about the possibility of tying a percentage of the money spent on football and basketball to required spending on Olympic sports.
"I think we're coming to a point where we’re going to be at no return if we don’t get our act together," the Notre Dame AD started his comments. "And try to speak with one voice and solve this."
Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua stood out at Trump's roundtable by actually proposing a real solution
"I think there's got to be a commitment that if you're going to spend X on college football, Y on men's basketball, and Z on women's basketball, you should be required to pay some sort of percentage of that to reinvest into your own Olympic movement within your universities."
"I think we're coming to a point where we're going to be at no return if we don't get our act together and try to speak with one voice and solve this."
Bevacqua has been one of the athletic directors who has certainly taken advantage of the new NIL and Transfer Portal rules while making it very clear he thinks they need to be tweaked.
The Notre Dame AD comes across as one of the only ones who truly knows he needs to operate within the rules, but also knows even his school should be hampered by certain regulations in the very near future.
