The National Championship game between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Ohio State Buckeyes is rapidly approaching. As the two historic programs prepare to clash once again, it's worthwhile to take a look back at the history between the teams.
With two postseason matchups and eight total games between the storied teams, many may suspect that the Fighting Irish would hold the upper hand.
However, over the last 90 years in which Notre Dame and Ohio State have played each other eight times, the Buckeyes have disappointingly walked away victorious six times – including both postseason clashes.
All-time records between Notre Dame and Ohio State football
- Overall record: 6-2, Ohio State
- First-ever matchup: Nov. 2, 1935 – 18-3, Notre Dame
- Most recent matchup: Sept. 23, 2023 – 17-14, Ohio State
- Smallest margin of victory: 3 points – Nov. 2, 1935 – 18-3, Notre Dame
- Largest margin of victory: 19 points – Sept. 30, 1995 – 45-27, Ohio State
Notre Dame has not defeated the Buckeyes since 1936 when the Fighting Irish swept their home-and-away series against Ohio State – the only two wins that ND can claim over OSU. Meanwhile, the Buckeyes are on a six-game winning streak against the Fighting Irish, including five double-digit victories over Notre Dame.
In 2006 and 2016, the Buckeyes bullied Notre Dame in their postseason matchups – both in the Fiest Bowl game. In 2006, Ohio State won 34-20, and 10 years later, the Buckeyes earned a 44-28 victory.
Most recently, the Fighting Irish, led by head coach Marcus Freeman and star quarterback Sam Hartman, hosted the Buckeyes in South Bend, IN. Despite Hartman's star power and Notre Dame's impressive defense, Ohio State stormed onto campus and claimed a 17-14 victory.
This time around, the matchup is for all of the glory. The two teams are scheduled to kick off the National Championship game at 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday, Jan. 20.
