Hannah Hidalgo puts Notre Dame basketball on her back against UCONN
The Notre Dame basketball program just got its signature win for the 2023-2024 season. Hannah Hidalgo and company led the women's basketball team to a massive, blowout win over the UCONN Huskies on Saturday night, that could cure quite a bit of ills.
Not only did the women's hoop team get a big win, but they showed a finishing move in the 82-67 victory that has been missing for the last month. It should surprise no one that shooting guard Hannah Hidalgo dominated the opposition as the Fighting Irish trampled the Huskies.
Hidalgo, who has already won several Freshman of the Week honors in the ACC this year, might have just put together her most complete game of her young career.
Hidalgo finished with a career high 34 points (the third time this year she's scord 30 or more) and added 10 rebounds and 6 assists. The freshman also had one of the best games of the year shooting as she was 14-of-24 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Notre Dame basketball makes a statement in women's hoops
Saturday night didn't start out all that well. After the first period, it looked like the Notre Dame basketball program was going to go 0-for-2 on the day after Micah Shrewsberry's squad dropped a close one to Boston College.
8th ranked UCONN finished the first quarter with a 21-14 lead over the Fighting Irish, but Hidalgo and company bounced back in the second period as they took a 44-35 lead into the half. The Huskies came back out after the break and closed within 60-57.
In the fourth quarter, Hidalgo and company took control thanks to a 22-10 run in the final period.
The win comes as the Notre Dame women's basketball program has struggled a bit. Though they've mostly won, they've not looked good doing it. They also most recently dropped a bad loss to the Syracuse Orange. The victory is surprsingly enough, their second straight over UCONN.
