While the Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball team is coming off a subpar season, it’s clear the program isn’t going to rest on its laurels. The team has already looked at bolstering its roster with a big transfer bat, now it’s also added a new assistant to the staff.

During his first two seasons with Notre Dame baseball, Shawn Stiffler has led the Irish to a 57-49 record. He knows this isn’t good enough for the program and with that made a move on Thursday to bolster his coaching staff. Lucas Jones was hired as an assistant coach as he will help on the infield along with base-running.

While there are some Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans who might not be all that impressed with a hire from Lynchburg University, it’s worth pointing out the coach’s resume.

Jones, in his previous job was the head coach since 2017. He was extremely successful in his tenure, as he was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2021.  In 2023, Jones guided his team to a National Championship.

The hope is that Jones experience will help the Irish get over the hump and return back to the NCAA Tournament.

It’s seems like that was a long time ago, but as it turns out, the Notre Dame baseball team was once very, very good. The recent season has soiled some of its own resume.

Pitching was a big problem in the 2024 season as the offense was still pretty good for the most part. The team also did show some signs of life later in the year after getting off to a horrendous start in the ACC.

The hope is that Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball can be bolstered by this hire and get back to the postseason.
