Notre Dame Fighting Irish star gets his second Paris Olympics medal
To say that Notre Dame Fighting Irish athletes have had a good Paris Olympics might be a bit of an understatement. They’ve had a wonderful week. One of the athletes that has contributed to that success is swimmer Chris Guiliano who earned his second medal of the Olympics. It also happened to be the fifth for Notre Dame.
As of late Tuesday night, Notre Dame would rank 10th in the medal standings if it were a separate country, behind Canada’s six medals.
Guiliano, a gold medalist Saturday in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay, did not swim Tuesday’s final in the 4x200 freestyle relay. Because he was in the lineup for the heats, he was awarded the same medal as the final foursome.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish star nabs another medal
Earlier in the night, Guiliano was sixth in semifinals of the 100-meter freestyle in 47.72 seconds, or .11 from third. He will go for a third medal in Wednesday’s final. In the heats, he was eighth in 48.25.
Guiliano is the first ever varsity male swimmer out of Notre Dame to make the U.S. Olympic team, according to the university. In addition to being an Olympian, Guiliano is a four-time individual ACC champion, five-time NCAA First Team All-American, and helped the Irish to their first ever top-10 finish at NCAA Championships back in March.
Now the Notre Dame Fighting Irish just need to finish these Olympics with a flourish and see if they can actually beat out some other countries.
