Notre Dame football at center of bizarre wide receiver NIL rumor mill

The Notre Dame football team's NIL efforts are the stuff of legend this winter, and apparently the stuff of some odd rumors as well.

The Notre Dame football team has made many moves in the transfer portal the last two seasons. In doing so, it’s clear that the Fighting Irish have a top notch NIL organization working in their favor.

While all that may be true, one of the odder stories of Notre Dame and the way they use, or rather didn’t use their NIL popped up a few weeks back. It turns out that sometimes, it’s easier to believe Notre Dame is trying to buy its way to a National Championship through any means neccesary.

This particular story was started by a Las Vegas Sun reporter who believed that the Irish were going after one of the best players on UNLV. It was ended by the player’s father.

The Sun’s Mike Grimala reported late last week that the Notre Dame football team was looking to add another wide receiver to an already impressive portal haul at that position. If the Irish were able to entice Ricky White to South Bend, he would certainly be a nice addition to Kris Mitchell, Beaux Collins and a 2024 recruiting class with tons of talent.

Grimala claimed that the White was offered an NIL package of $250,000 a year from the Notre Dame football program and that UNLV was trying to find a way to keep him. The reporter also claimed that White currently makes about $60,000 per year through NIL payouts.

Notre Dame football at the center of odd WR NIL rumors

If the Irish were making a push for the receiver, no one could have blamed them. Ricky White hauled down 88 catches for 1,483 and 8 touchdowns this past season. But the UNLV star’s own father shot down the rumor, rather quickly.

“Where are you getting your information from,” Ricky White Sr. wrote on X in response to Grimala. “My son has never spoken with any colleges about any NIL package, you are dead wrong for putting out false information. Ricky is a Rebel and has been committed since day one.”

As White didn’t enter the portal and at this point, cannot it does appear that Grimala’s tale of Notre Dame football hauling in another big offensive weapon was, indeed, false.
