The prevailing theory about why a player transfers to one school over another usually boils down to either getting promised a starting spot or getting more NIL money. According to one recent visitor to South Bend, Notre Dame Football stands out precisely because promises weren’t part of the sales pitch.

Tre’shon Devones is one of the most sought after defensive backs in the transfer portal this spring so he’s going to have his pick of teams. Luckily, it’s clear that Marcus Freeman and company made a good impression on his strip to see what Notre Dame has to offer. The fact that he was told he had to compete for a starting spot was a big part of what impressed him.

Devones spoke to Irish Sports Daily earlier this week and seemed legitimately impressed with how honest the coaches were about their defensive back situation.

“A lot of coaches will tell you you’ll be the starter. They are selling you that so you can commit,” Devones said. “A lot of those situations aren’t set in stone. It’s hard to say you’re the starter already. I’m not the type of player who wants the easy way. I want to earn something. I wouldn’t want to be put in an easy situation where I’m the starter because how much can you really trust that?”

Notre Dame Football defensive back target has a good head on his shoulders

Devones went on to say that defensive backs coach Mike Mickens not only made it clear that the former Rice DB isn’t guaranteed a starting spot, but Mickens laid out what the transfer could expect as far as playing time.

“He said I could compete to be a starter, which could mean I could go from 80 reps to 60 reps to 50 reps.”

At the end of the day, it appears that Notre Dame Football is taking an approach that stands out. It also appears that Tre’Shon Devones has a very good head on his shoulders going into the transfer process.
