The bad blood between the Notre Dame football team and Louisville yesterday was rather obvious. It was so bad that for several moments just as the game was ending, it looked like a full-fledged brawl might break out.

While it was hard to pinpoint exactly why things were so tense, other than it was a hard-fought game against two teams hoping to make a run towards the playoffs, one Irish defender shed a little light on why his team might have had a problem with the Cards.

Clark originally looked like the instigator of some things for Notre Dame football when he head butted an opposing receiver. It looked especially bad because he wound up and then popped his helmet with his own.

While the announcers and even some Fighting Irish fans found the move out of bounds, Clark took to social media to try and explain why he did what he did. And while it doesn’t excuse the action or the 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty he got because of the head butt, it certainly explains why he thought he need to get some measure of revenge.

When one account tweeted out the video of Clark doing the deed, the defensive back quote tweeted the post and offered up his explanation.

“If you were brought up to let someone spit in your face, and not do anything I get it,” the defender said. “Not me though, be easy.”

All of this makes it an issue where nobody was in the right and nobody was in the wrong. It’s something Clark can’t be doing again and hopefully won’t. It’s also something that hopefully never happens to him again.

Of course, players get caught up in the heat of the moment and the Notre Dame football player can’t be expected to just shrug off something like getting intentionally spit on.
