Notre Dame football: Power conference AD sees more expansion coming soon
Despite several reshuffles of the power conference landscape, the Notre Dame football team is still very much an independent. However, every time there is a set of moves made by the big conferences, there’s always that expectation that the Fighting Irish might eventually decide it’s time to move on.
The question tho, is just how would the Irish be affected if there is more movement. If the Big Ten adds more teams, as has been one of the biggest rumors of the last few years, would the Blue and Gold feel like they’re missing their chance?
We might find out sooner rather than later. According to Utah Athletic Director Mark Harlan, there is going to be more shuffling in the next 3 or 4 years. Some might respond that there’s going to be more expansion sooner than that, but one has to wonder if things might settle down before the big stuff hits.
Notre Dame football looking at expansion again?
Harlan did have a reason why he thinks the landscape might settle before it shifts again in four years. The Utah AD believes that for now, television networks are ok looking at what they have.
He pointed out, during a recent appearance on ESPN radio that most of TV deals that have been struck in the last few years are 6-year contracts.
That means that some of the networks are perfectly happy standing pat for the next few falls. However, Harlan seems to understand that Notre Dame football and the rest of the sports world should be on alert.
