The Notre Dame football team begins its fall practice surrounded by some high expectations. Most people expect the Fighting Irish to make the playoffs. Some even expect them to make quite a bit of noise when they get there.

Of course, in order to make the playoffs, the Irish are going to have to make it through their schedule fairly unscathed. Should they take a loss or two, they’re also going to need to be pretty highly ranked.

According to one analyst, they’ll likely have that covered. Barring a total collapse at some point in the season. That’s because he believes the Notre Dame football team is going to start off the season ranked pretty high.

Phil Steele claims to have correctly predicted the teams in the Preseason AP Poll 95.3% of the time in the 15 years he’s been doing those kinds of predictions. Irish fans should be happy to know he’s predicted Notre Dame to start off the season as the No. 6 team in the AP Top 25.

This could be the highest preseason prediction in the AP Poll for the Fighting Irish. Marcus Freeman went the way of a veteran QB in the portal, this time Duke’s Riley Leonard.

Still an Independent, Notre Dame can’t finish higher than No. 5 in potential CFP rankings. However, Freeman might be set up for his best year as coach in South Bend when it’s all said and done.

Notre Dame football fans would be very, very happy if that’s the case.
