Notre Dame football prepares for Texas A&M star with a bit of insider knowledge
Texas A&M starting quarterback Conner Weigman doesn’t have a long resume. That doesn’t mean the Notre Dame football coaches don’t know how dangerous he can be. Thank Mike Denbrock for giving Al Golden a special preview of what Weigman can do when he cuts loose.
“Really good with his feet,” Golden said of Weigman. “He’s got enough length to stay in the pocket and rip it. He can escape and run but he can also escape, keep his eyes down the field and throw it. He’s a really talented quarterback and obviously going to be a great challenge for us.”
Despite that, Notre Dame football coaches know that Weigman has started and completed just one game that resulted in a win against a high-level foe. Denbrock was front and center for that win, a 38-23 home win over sixth-ranked LSU on Thanksgiving weekend in 2022.
Notre Dame football has insider scouting report on Texas A&M QB1
While Weigman is impressive, he’s only played 9 games in two years. He played in five games in 2022 and four in 2023. The Irish are hoping that his lack of real-world experience will make him a bit shaky on the biggest of big stages on Saturday night.
It’s worth pointing out that when Weigman has gotten into the game, he’s been excellent. In those 9 appearances he’s thrown 16 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions. In that aforementioned LSU game he completed 12 of 18 passes for 155 yards and 2 TDs.
He’s had some stinkers too. Two weeks before that Tigers game he went completed just 14 of 36 for just 121 yards in a 13-10 loss to Auburn. Just 8 of 15 for for 90 yards in a 30-24 loss to South Carolina earlier in the season.
Weigman is not yet a proven winner yet either. Texas A&M is just 5-4 in those 9 appearances. Granted, Aggies fans will tell you that’s largely because of their former incompetent head coach. That Mike Elko will change the outcome.
We’ll have to wait and see. It’s clear Notre Dame football believes it has its hands full with the talented quarterback. But they also know he’s not unbeatable.
