Ex-Notre Dame football receiver heads west for next school
Former Notre Dame football wide receiver has decided on where he’ll be playing football in 2024. In the end, the decision makes quite a bit of sense and one has to wonder if homesickness didn’t play a part in his decision to leave South Bend in the first place.
Merriweather, hailing from Washington State, is heading back to the West Coast. However he won’t be going all the way home as the receiver has decided to transfer to the Cal Golden Bears.
Merriweather announced his decision on social media last week by showing a picture of him clad in the Cal football uniform. In addition to the picture he included the caption, “go time.” The meaning was rather self-explanatory.
The decision is an interesting one for a number of reasons with him going back to the side of the country he’s from being rather minor in the face of the upheaval that’s going on in college football.
Interestingly enough, it turns out that the former Notre Dame football star is going to be facing off against some familiar foes from his time with the Fighting Irish, considering Cal is joining the ACC in 2024.
On a Golden Bears team that struggled offensively, Merriweather is certainly going to be given the chance to show what he can do and to take a starting job on the newest member of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
This past year he shone at times, catching 14 passes for 284 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Notre Dame football team. Indeed his loss was seen as a big one for a time, then the Marcus Freeman and company replaced he and other departing teammates with guys like Beaux Collins and Kris Mitchell.
Notre Dame football could see Merriweather again
It doesn’t seem incredibly likely, but it’s even possible that the transfer receiver could face off against his former teammates at some point. While the Irish’s 2024 schedule is set. There are some openings on the 2025 slate.
Could Notre Dame football end up scheduling Cal, especially since it’s now in the ACC? Stay tuned.
