As we kick off Saturday morning, the Notre Dame football team has a problem. They just keep losing recruiting battles for wide receivers

Earlier this week, the Fighting Irish lost another battle. LaVerne, California wide receiver Dylan Robinson made his decision between the Irish, UCLA, and Washington. There was a time when it felt like ND was the front-runner.

If Notre Dame football was leading for Robinson, they fell back. Robinson picked Washington, underlining what has been an odd struggle this spring and summer. With Derek Meadows set to announce his school choice later today, one has to wonder if wide receiver coach Mike Brown can close the deal.

Notre Dame football’s struggles in WR recruiting should cause concern

It’s not that the Irish are losing these recruiting battles. Just a few years ago, they wouldn’t have been involved in a Top 3 or Top 5 for some of the best receiver prospects in the country. But the fact that Marcus Freeman’s crew can’t close the deal has raised eyebrows.

Whether it’s JonAnthony Hall, or Jayvan Boggs, or seeing the decommitment of Shaun Terry (who later went to Missouri) or Robinson, a problem has arisen. And there are more than a few people who think Notre Dame’s new wide receiver coach is at the root.

One needs to keep in mind that while the Irish had a great haul in the wide receiver recruiting field last year, that was when Chansi Stuckey was manning the position.

There was some parting of ways and parting of personalities this winter and no one seems to sure exactly what or why it went down. It’s also worth mentioning that people weren’t exactly heartbroken to see Stuckey leave.

But with the recruiting struggles Notre Dame has seen in the last few months, questions need answers. What closing argument are the Irish making that isn’t successful? If they lose out on Derek Meadows despite getting him to postpone his announcement then the question are going to get louder.
