After a relatively quiet first two days of the 2024 NFL Draft, Saturday saw a flurry of action where numerous Notre Dame football players were either drafted or signed as free agents right after the draft concluded.

Things started off in the 5th round for Cam Hart, who waited far longer than he should have had to hear his name called. Hart joined teammate Joe Alt on the Los Angeles Chargers and that seemed to allow the dam to burst.

Linebacker JD Bertrand was drafted just three picks later, by the Atlanta Falcons and then running back Audric Estime was selected just four picks after Bertrand. Estime might have the best chance of coming out of nowhere to be an impact player of anyone from the Notre Dame football team as he’ll get a chance to show what he can do for the Denver Broncos.

In the seventh round, edge rusher Javonte Jean-Baptiste was the seventh and final Notre Dame football star to go in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, that wasn’t it for all the former Fighting Irish players who will give it a go in the NFL.

Just moments after Mr. Irrelevant was taken, former Irish quarterback Sam Hartman got a call that likely brought a sigh of relief. He signed a free-agent deal with the Washington Commanders. He’ll join Jean-Baptiste in their quest to make a roster come the fall.

Meanwhile, kicker Spencer Shrader is going to get to stick close to home as he signed a free-agency contract with the Indianapolis Colts.

That makes the grand total of former Notre Dame football players who will get their NFL shot this spring, summer, and fall to nine. Now it’s all about watching and seeing how many of them can open the season on an NFL roster.
