The first half of the Notre Dame football season has been quite the roller coaster ride. There was the win over Texas A&M and then the loss to Northern Illinois. There was the 66-7 win over Purdue and then the less than impressive win over the Miami Redhawks.

While things have been consistently inconsistent, one thing has held true in every win and every loss. The Fighting Irish offense hasn’t been as good as people hoped when the season began. That’s been obvious to everyone, including quarterback Riley Leonard.

Even now that the Notre Dame football has the chance to get back into the playoffs, the offense needs to find some consistency. Riley Leonard knows there needs to be improvement. And he thinks people are going to see those improvements next weekend.

“It’s kind of hard to look at the bigger picture sometimes,” Leonard told Irish Sports Daily. “I feel I’m very narrow in my vision. I see right now that the team is better than we were last week. The offense is better than it was last week. The defense is better than it was last week. We’re starting to roll and get our confidence back.”

Notre Dame football running plays Riley Leonard likes more

Leonard thinks that the offense has taken steps forward since the beginning of the season. And mostly because he’s getting more comfortable with his coaches. Specifically quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock.

“I think it was because of my preparation, and it’s all due to the coaches. I think we’re starting to understand each other and understand the plays I really like, so they do a great job calling that.”

There will no doubt be some Irish fans who get bent out of shape over the comment about calling plays Riley Leonard likes. However, those fans don’t seem to understand that every player is going to have some calls they like more than others.

What the Notre Dame football quarterback is saying here is the the coaches and their QB1 are getting to work together better. That could be a deadly combination. Especially with a week of practice get under their belts.
