In this era of Notre Dame football, the goal for every season is to at least make the playoffs. After a loss to Northern Illinois, there were some doubts that 2024 would end that way.

Three straight wins later, including a victory over a ranked Louisville Cardinals team, there are plenty of Irish fans who think there is now a chance they're back in the running. And it appears that they are indeed back in the running.

Count ESPN among those who thinks the Notre Dame football team has a very good chance at getting back to the playoffs. The Football Power Index actually gives the team lots of good news. There's news that seems to indicate that if they can take care of business, they can make some serious noise.

The win out percentage might be the most important for the Fighting Irish. According to ESPN's FPI, Notre Dame has a 30.5 percent chance of winning all of the rest of their games. That is, by the way, the best in the nation. Ohio State is second in the nation with 21.8 percent chance of winning out.

Notre Dame football could win out

As far as making the playoffs, the Irish officially have a 46.1 percent chance of getting into the field. That number isn't at the top of the list, but it's safely inside the Top 12. They're actually given the 9th best chances of getting a berth.

Once they get there, the Irish don't have a great chance of making the National Title game, but it's not zero. Their six percent chances of making the big game is 10th in the country.

Finally, the Notre Dame football team has a 2.4 percent chance of winning the title. That's small of course, but it's 10th among the nation as well. With that context, it's clear the Irish are a contender, at least according to the analytics available now.
