Steve Angeli won't face off against his old Notre Dame teammates in November after all.
Both sides circled that game between the Fighting Irish and the Syracuse Orange since Angeli transferred to the ACC school this spring. After a great start to his first campaign as a starting quarterback, his return to South Bend on Senior Day would be quite the storyline. And then Saturday happened.
Former Notre Dame football star Steve Angeli's season ends
As the Orange were thoroughly dominating the Clemson Tigers, Angeli was having another excellent outing. That is, until the former Notre Dame star went down with an injury and left the game. On Sunday morning, the school confirmed he'd suffered an Achilles injury and will miss the rest of the season.
The injury is another blow to a career where Angeli has quietly waited his turn. He backed up both Sam Hartman and Riley Leonard the last two years. He finally moved on only after it was clear he wasn't winning the Notre Dame starting job over either CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey.
He then won the job with Syracuse, and despite starting the season, he put up huge numbers. Angeli has completed 62% of his passes for 1,316 yards, 10 touchdowns, and just 2 interceptions. Now Angeli has to sit and wait again.
If there is a bright side here, he should get two more years of eligibility. He already had one more year after this one and should get a hardship redshirt because of this season. That also means, assuming he can come back healthy next season, he'll still get a matchup against his former Notre Dame teammates next fall.
