Notre Dame Baseball: Irish vault to No. 6 in latest Baseball America Rankings
By Brad Weiss
The Notre Dame Baseball team is one of the best in America, and they recently were ranked No. 6 in the latest Baseball America rankings.
It almost seems like an eternity ago that the Notre Dame Baseball team was picked to finish last in their division in the ACC. Since then, they have become one of the more surprising teams in the country, stacking series wins together, and vaulting up the national rankings each and every week.
The Irish, led by second-year head coach Link Jarrett, have relied on a steady approach, getting good starting pitching, and relying on some key veterans in the lineup. Carter Putz and Niko Kavadas are flat out getting it done at the dish, with Kavadas already blasting 15 home runs this season.
For the Irish, they are not just beating teams they should beat, but they are beating some of the best in the country, and that has led to some national exposure.
Notre Dame Baseball ranked No. 6
In their latest college baseball rankings, Baseball America had the Notre Dame Baseball team as their No. 6 team in the country. After being shutout by Boston College in their three-game series opener, they bounced back in a big way, winning the next two, taking the series win, and in the process, erasing a nine-run deficit in their 13-9 victory on Saturday.
After a mid-week game against Valparaiso, the Irish will head to Chapel Hill this weekend, taking on a top-25 team in the North Carolina Tar Heels while most eyes will be on the NFL Draft. They also have a matchup with another top-25 ACC opponent in Virginia Tech on the horizon, so they will have two more real chances to show that they belong as a host team for the opening round of the College Baseball Tournament.
There is reason to believe that this special group could go as far as Omaha this season, as they are not only beating the best teams in the country, but they are displaying a never-say-die attitude every time they take the field. The spring season as a whole has been great for Notre Dame, as softball and lacrosse are also ranked in the top-25, but for the baseball team, this could be an all-time squad before all is said and done.
