Notre Dame football: True freshmen RB give exciting glimpse into future
By Brad Weiss
The Notre Dame football team is loaded at running back, and both Audric Estime and Logan Diggs are exciting players to lean on in the future.
The Notre Dame football program has an elite feature back in Kyren Williams, one who could be a first-team All-American before all is said and done this season. Williams burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman this past season, becoming a key piece on an offense that helped the Irish to an undefeated regular season.
Behind Williams was true freshman Chris Tyree, who looked to be an explosive player every time he got the ball. In 2021, Tyree figures to play a big role in the offense once again and will help the development of two new true freshmen running backs in Logan Diggs and Audric Estime.
Estime, a bruising back from New Jersey, where he was the Gatorade Player of the Year, is someone who can pound the ball between the tackles, but also has the elusive speed to the outside. Diggs, like Tyree, is a lightning bolt with the ball in his hands and really turned heads during the spring and summer.
Also, C’Bo Flemister is a player that Brian Kelly has leaned on in the past, giving the Irish five options to tote the rock in 2021.
Notre Dame football loaded at running back
As a group, this is as deep as the running back position has been for Notre Dame in quite some time, and they are only going to get stronger. Assuming that Williams leaves for the NFL as a redshirt sophomore, there is more than enough talent to fill that void, and they also have an elite running back coming in from Texas in Jadarian Price in the 2022 recruiting class.
With a new quarterback in Jack Coan, and some questions at wide receiver, running back is going to be crucial to the Irish’s success in 2021. Also, the offensive line has been revamped after four players went to the NFL, so being able to lean on such a talented group is going to be huge for Notre Dame.
The Notre Dame football team will lean heavily on the running backs this season, and that includes both Diggs and Estime. They won’t be feature backs in Year 1, but they both bring an exciting skill set to the position group, and they will certainly make an impact as true freshmen in 2021.
