A former Notre Dame Fighting Irish footballer who never actually played college football is one of the best kickers in the NFL and just made history.

The history of the NFL is absolutely littered with former Notre Dame Fighting Irish stars. Though when it comes to playing in the National Football League, those former stars tended to have actually played football in South Bend.

Of course, Brandon Aubrey played football as well. Just not the kind that people fill Notre Dame Stadium to watch on Saturday afternoons. Aubrey played soccer for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and he did it well.

But when he left South Bend, he didn’t find a ton of success on the soccer pitch. So he decided to try his luck on the football field. Finally. And he did great.

His new career culminated on Sunday in the latest Dallas Cowboys game against the Philadelphia Eagles. In that game, he gave his team a 17-14 lead thank to hitting his 19th consecutive field goal to start the season.

That’s an NFL rookie record. And it comes one week after he tied the record. That’s perhaps all the more impressive.

It’s one thing to tie and break a record in one game. There’s not much time to think about things. You just go out there and do your job.

Aubrey spent an entire week thinking about getting the record. And then did it.

Ex-Notre Dame Fighting Irish star hits record kick

Aubrey is now 19-for-19 in his NFL career. It’s also not as though the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish soccer player is only hitting easy kicks. His record breaking field goal was from 51 yards out. He had a 58-yarder in the game where he tied the record.

He’s doing all of this with just a few years of professional football behind him.

He got his start with the USFL and then got a tryout for the Cowboys. And now it looks like he’s going to go down as the best rookie kicker that’s ever been associated with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
