Coming into May Day, the Notre Dame football team knew it could potentially score a couple of recruiting victories, and now there's one down and one to go.

Aidan O'Neill, one of the best EDGE players in the 2027 recruiting class just pulled the trigger for the Fighting Irish. On Friday morning, O'Neill announced his school of choice, picking Marcus Freeman and Co. over Kentucky and Penn State.

Aidan O'Neill gives Notre Dame football a major EDGE win to start May

While a recruiting win is never a foregone conclusion, it can hardly be called a surprise that Notre Dame won O'Neill. After he took a visit to South Bend earlier this spring, he went out of his way to say he felt as though he "belonged" there.

O'Neill loved the coaches, but he also really hit it off with the Notre Dame players. "I think the guys are just so down to earth,” he said at the time. "I got to talk to a couple of the players and got the opportunity to go out to dinner with some of the coaches and players. They were just really nice, and they felt like real people."

It's not a surprise that the Irish went all in on Aidan O'Neill and wanted him badly. He's rated as the No. 108 player in the class according to Rivals Industry Rankings and No. 127 according to 247Sports Composite. Both sites have him as the third-best player in New Jersey, and both sites have him inside the Top 15 of EDGE rushers in the 2027 class.

Notre Dame football could turn one commitment into a bigger recruiting surge fast

Now that the Irish got O'Neill to start the month, they won't have to wait long to find out if they can go 2-for-2. Now that they have their talented defensive lineman in the boat, they're waiting on their 2027 quarterback commit.

Wonderful "Champ" Monds IV is also selecting his school on May Day, and so far, all the predictions have him picking Notre Dame.
