Notre Dame's 2027 recruiting run could continue any day now. Marcus Freeman and Co. received a very big prediction over the weekend to get its 2027 quarterback in Wonderful "Champ" Monds IV. This particular recruiting win comes primarily because the team's original 2027 quarterback, Teddy Jarrard, reclassified to the 2026 class.
Interestingly enough, Monds is also a prospect who reclassified to the 2027 cycle after originally being ranked among, if not the top, quarterbacks in the 2028 class. Like Jarrard, Monds is said to be leaning toward the Fighting Irish because he likes the possibility of playing early. Considering CJ Carr won the starting job as a redshirt freshman, Marcus Freeman has demonstrated he's not married to the idea of his quarterback needing to be an established veteran.
Notre Dame in line for a commitment from Wonderful 'Champ' Monds IV
Over the weekend, Champ Monds drew an official Crystal Ball from 247Sports analyst Brian Dohn. The prediction came after the talented quarterback was in South Bend for an unofficial visit. Should Notre Dame indeed win this recruiting battle, it would mean beating out other Power 4 programs like Florida, Ohio State, Florida State, and Miami, among others.
Monds is considered a 4-star quarterback according to the Rivals Industry Rankings and the No. 21 quarterback in the class. He's also the No. 28 player in Florida.
Notre Dame football already has a loaded quarterback room even without Champ Monds
His numbers from his freshman year alone, when he threw for 2,234 yards, 23 touchdowns, and just 5 interceptions while showing off his dual-threat value by rushing for 502 yards and 9 rushing TDs.
The most interesting aspect of Champ Monds pulling the trigger on a Notre Dame commitment is that he joins quite a few other young quarterbacks he'll need to do battle with. Blake Hebert, Noah Grubbs, and Jarrard are all freshmen, and Carr is only a redshirt-sophomore. While Freeman is open to letting young quarterbacks play, the QB room is rather packed with talent at the moment.
