When the Notre Dame football team hauled in 4-star defensive back Ayden Pouncey, there were plenty of people who were plenty impressed by the work that head coach Marcus Freeman has done this past month.
And while the Fighting Irish has grabbed several high profile and highly rated prospects, Pouncey might be leading the group in superlatives by outsiders in the immediate aftermath of giving his pledge on the same day when five Notre Dame stars were getting drafted.
Ayden Pouncey already turning heads after Notre Dame football commitment
One outsider who certainly knows Pouncey is the founder of the elite 7-on-7 program South Florida Express. Brett Goetz recently talked to Irish Sports Daily about the defensive back and had all sorts of glowing things to say about Pouncey, including that he has “incredible instincts.”
“He's been blessed with incredible instincts,” Goetz said “He's very long and rangy and loves to play the game. He's an incredibly great competitor.”
If that sounds like former Notre Dame defensive back Xavier Watts. Just check out what else Goetz had to say about Pouncey.
“Just being in the right place at the right time a lot and understanding the game, understanding schemes and putting it all together and making plays. He's been incredible for us for three years in the 7-on-7 game, just continuously finding a way to make interceptions. Last year, in the national championship, he had two interceptions against Deuce Knight and he was incredible. He basically won that game for us.”
Yes, the Deuce Knight referenced there is the former Notre Dame football quarterback commit who has since gone on to sign with Auburn. It would certainly be fun to see Pouncey do that to Knight again when they’re both playing at the college level, perhaps in the playoffs.
