Notre Dame looks braced for a recruiting loss to the resurgent Florida Gators

Should Notre Dame football fans expect 2027 quarterback prospect David Davidson to choose the Fighting Irish when he announces his commitment on April 9? Probably not, but stranger things have happened, especially during the Marcus Freeman era.

Davidson announced he’ll decide on his future school on Thursday, and the Irish are officially in the mix alongside Kentucky, Florida, Auburn, and Georgia. Based on predictions from multiple analysts, most expect him to choose the Gators when he commits.

Notre Dame will almost certainly be on the outside looking in, especially considering that the quarterback prospect is checking out Gainesville ahead of the Gators’ spring game on Saturday afternoon. It seems more than likely that the Cardinal Mooney (Sarasota, FL) product is planning to commit and then visit new head coach Jon Sumrall’s program.

Notre Dame football appears to trail Florida for 2027 quarterback David Davidson

I think highly of Florida. They’ve been recruiting me hard and showing a lot of hospitality,” Davidson told Rivals’ Chad Simmons in March ahead of a visit to Miami. The Hurricanes are no longer in the running as they landed 4-star Israel Abrams a few weeks back.

Davidson had a huge junior campaign, leading his team to a state championship while completing 65% of his passes for 2,392 yards and 23 touchdowns. Cardinal Mooney went 14-2 and finished as the No. 34 team in the nation and No. 4 team in Florida.

If there's any news that could make Notre Dame backers feel better about potentially losing Davin Davidson to Florida, it’s that he’s far from a finished product, even though he’s clearly got some serious talent.

“Davidson is another physically-talented 2027 passer who has seen his profile rise coming out of his junior season, as he helped Sarasota (Fla.) Cardinal Mooney to a state title,” Rivals’ Charles Power wrote in his official scouting report. “Davidson pairs immense size at around 6-foot-6, 215 pounds with a very live arm. He’s more of a fastball thrower right now and will need to continue adding nuance as a passer. The size, arm, and movement skills are very projectable, and his physical upside has created a considerable buzz.”

The other tidbit that would soften the blow if the quarterback goes where he’s expected to is that Notre Dame might want to take a 2027 QB; they’ve got enough young talent that it’s not required.
