Already this season, the Notre Dame football team has had to figure out how to win games without key player on the field. For their game against Georgia Tech, and for the rest of the season, the Irish will be without Benjamin Morrison, but he’s not the only defender who won’t suit up against the Wrambling Wreck.

Earlier this week, head coach Marcus Freeman confirmed another defense lineman will miss Saturday afternoon’s game. That is an especially tough loss considering the Irish are already without Boubacar Troure.

Notre Dame football will also be without lineman Jason Onye. Onye will miss his second game due to a personal matter. Freeman has not, of course, shed any light on what that personal matter might be.

Notre Dame football dealing with absence of Jason Onye

The loss of Onye is a big one. Despite limited playing time so far this year, Onye has 7 tackles and 1.5 sacks. What’s even more frustrating is that it looked like the lineman was starting to come into his own.

During Notre Dame’s rout of the Purdue Boilermakers, Onye notched 4 total pressures and the 1.5 sacks he has on the season. He added another pressure against Miami and then three more against Louisville while recording a season-high in snaps with 24.

The good news is that the Notre Dame football team did get another defensive lineman back last week and he made an immediate impact. Gabriel Rubio showed why the coaches were so happy to have him back. Hopefully he can mitigate Onye’s absence.
