While the Notre Dame football team is wrapping up April looking like they could be adding onto what was a hot month recruiting-wise, they’re also sending feelers out to kids who are probably a ways away from pulling the pledge trigger.

Count 2027 linebacker Jalaythan Mayfield among those who, at this point, are more about showing interest than hoping actually to get him to commit to the Fighting Irish. Still, it looks like Marcus Freeman and his team have got his attention and have their foot in the door.

Mayfield, who is a 4-star prospect that also happens to be the top player in the state of North Carolina according to On3, is more than happy to get an offer and get the attention from the Blue and Gold. Mayfield most recently talked to linebackers coach Max Bullough earlier this week.

He just came to watch me practice,” Mayfield, told Irish Sports Daily. “He said it was good to see me out there and he wanted to start the relationship, build that relationship with me and continue to build that relationship by inviting me to the campus and getting me up there to see it.”

“It's pretty crazy to think that he could find a small-town kid like me and then make that trip,” he added. “That means a lot to me.”

It’s worth pointing out that even if he is a “small town kid,” he’s someone who has caught the eye of plenty of power teams. He’s got offers from Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia among others.

The Notre Dame football team is now working on setting up an official visit with Mayfield. The prospect said that nothing is concrete yet but that he does think he’ll go and check out what South Bend has to offer before very long.
