If the spring game provided a scare for Joey O'Brien and the Notre Dame football team, then the picture he just posted on his social media is bound to terrify Fighting Irish fans.

O'Brien posted a picture on his Instagram of him laying in a hospital bed and his right leg sporting a rather large cast that started just below the knee. In addition to the photo, he added the caption "God's plan" and then the hashtag "stillgud." Despite that, the defensive back doesn't look particularly pleased as he looks into the camera with two thumbs up.

Joey O'Brien injury scare gets much more unsettling after social media post

Notre Dame hasn't officially given an indication on what happened during the spring game, but O'Brien had to be helped off the field early on and was later spotted leaning on a pair of crutches. While the coaches have talked quite a bit about players who have stood out since then, the program hasn't addressed the severity of the injury.

That no news about O'Brien has come out was already a sign that it might be serious enough to limit not only his summer workouts, but also his availability for the fall. The picture of him in the hospital and in that cast/padding/bandage certainly doesn't scream good news.

Notre Dame football fans now wait for Joey O'Brien’s injury prognosis

As a general rule, when players tend to post these kinds of messages on social media, it means they're going to be out for a while. If someone did a real scientific study on it, they'd probably find this kind of message means "out for the year" more often than not.

Joey O'Brien missing what was looking like it would be a very impressive freshman season, would be a massive bummer for the player and the Irish. The silver lining here is that Notre Dame has the horses to be very, very good without him. However, they'd love to have as many talented players on the field for them as possible. Hopefully, the Fighting Irish will shed some light on his situation before too long.
